Ubuntu Partners with Intel for Mobile Device Support May 8, 2007

From BBC, we get to learn that Ubuntu and Intel are working together to get to the point were Ubuntu-powered mobile devices such as cellphones and PDAs. They talk about the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project which hopes to have its first release in October 2007.
Pervasive Ubuntu – oh yeah!
It’s really cool to see Intel pushing the envelope with Open Source friendliness. Maybe AMD needs to catch up and brush up the ATI drivers – open source them and have a fighting chance in the newly growing desktop Linux market.
By the way, I came to know of the BBC article via Ercan, a reader, who adds:
I enjoy your ubuntu blog. I like the general updates on ubuntu but don’t forget the tips and tricks.
Tips, hmm, yes… it is hard to come by good ones everyday – and it becomes harder as Ubuntu gets better. I will work harder or it, Ercan. 🙂
Voting for more tips and tricks.
I hear you, earobinson… let me know dig up some old notes and bookmarks…
How long do you think it will take to hack the Ubuntu Mobile OS onto the Apple iPhone when it is released?
I’m interested to see how telecoms operators respond to this. Traditionally they have preferred to control mobile phone features. That will not be easy with an Ubuntu mobile.
Actually “we” learned it last week from an Ubuntu announcement. 🙂
ercanj – Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded is not meant for mobile phones, but for “mobile Internet devices”. See http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS2403415870.html
And carthik – don’t do too many tips, otherwise I can’t think of enough for my own blog 😉
I’m at the Ubuntu Developers summit right now and there is a really really nice group of people from intel who are working on the teeny laptops. It is great to see really enthusiastic people like this backed by such a huge company.
as far as tips are concerned; just wrote a -very basic- howto about installing feisty under qemu (open source PC emulator) in windows (for those of us who are not allowed to install OS’es on company laptops). It’s in Dutch, but if there is interest in it, I’m always willing to translate 🙂
Linux has been on mobile phones for a long time and there has been a misunderstanding. Ubuntu isn’t going for the mobile phones market. Canonical have just clarified that Intel wants Ubuntu for some MIDs or tablets (not phones).
Thanks to all for the clarification. In any case I imagine that within the next 1-3 years there will be no difference between a mobile phone and a mobile internet device. It is good to see Ubuntu getting onto mobile devices, particularly after the Dell announcement.
The most interesting thing about this article on the BBC and some other recent ones is that Ubuntu is getting some very serious publicity through a lot of major, non tech specific news sites. Good news.

You are right, as Ubuntu and Linux in general becomes easier, is more and more difficult to find tip and tricks to write about.
Congratulations for your site.

Tim, I know what you mean and you’ve inspired me to add one of my own: Leadership.

Thumbs up to her. Great advocacy material.
