Ubuntu Is Not 6 Years Old… Yet April 12, 2007

I read this article on how IBM’s DB2 database is supported on Ubuntu at CRN.

The article states:

Six-year-old Ubuntu is seen as an up-and-coming Linux distribution. Some industry observers call it the fastest-growing Linux in the enterprise.

Hmm, well, Ubuntu hasn’t turned three yet, so I wonder where they got the “6 year old” detail from, and am I the only one who finds the second sentence above vague and wishy-washy?

“latest Ubuntu 6.06 Linux release”

A bit behind as well I reckon…

Either that, or the fact that in a week there will have been 6 releases.

maybe they though that 6.06 means 6th year since start and not 2006.

If they are talking about Ubuntu for Enterprise, that is probably where they got that Dapper Drake was the latest release (Dapper was the last Long Term Support release, which would be the one geared for enterprise use). No idea where the 6 year old thing came from, though.

Anybody know what was the ubuntu’s starting date…?

November 2004. Ubuntu 4.10 (year 2004, month 10), lovingly called “Warty Warthog”

I think that somehow, they did find out the mayor version number increases every year, but did not yet link 6.* to 2006, and assumed we started with version 0.*
