Ubuntu-tan Wallpapers Make Up for Missing Ubuntu Mascot April 11, 2007

There is some small talk about the need for an Ubuntu Mascot at the Ubuntu-sounder mailing list. Though there are suggestions for a space-helmet sporting penguin, the idea hasn’t come to anything so far. In an email in the thread, there was link to some OS-tans to temporarily make up for the lack of a mascot. Its about time Ubuntu got a chweet-overloaded mascot, for the kids if not for us, don’t you think?
Without much further ado, here’s a couple of OS-tans for you to love, and to optionally invite to reside on your desktop 🙂
To avoid flooding the planet with pictures, there are two more pics, and some more details below.
The first two images can be obtained in various resolutions from the Ubuntu Japan artwork page. They were created by Piro. I wonder what the text on that desktop image means. I hope it is innocent, in any case.
The last image was created by Juzo-kun. I got them from this page with more OS-tans representing other Linux distros.
What’s an OS-tan you ask? Wikipedia provides the answer:
The OS-tans are an Internet phenomenon that originated with the Japanese Futaba Channel. The OS-tan, or OS Girls as they are sometimes referred to, are the personification of several operating systems by various amateur Japanese artists. Although a pure fan creation, the appearance of each OS-tan is generally consistent across artists.
File this under “fun” 🙂
Well, the first two pictures look way too chibi, in my humble opinion. The third one, on the other hand looks very cute, indeed.
If you want a manga-style tan that much, please keep his/her facial expressions at a “reasonable” level 😉
Well, since Ubuntu is (as far as Linux distros can be from somewhere) from South Africa, it would only make sense that the -tan be black, no?
Habari ya mchana is Kiswahili for “How are you this afternoon?”
One of the few things I can remember from my crash course in Kiswahili.

There is some nasty aliasing in the ubuntu logo that wraps around the girl in the first two pic.s
Nevermind, I’m just an idiot =)
I totally agree with Pizuz, I prefer the third one as well.
And personally I don’t like the mix of erotic and infantile look in the first two pics…
The word you were looking for is “pedophile”. And I totally agree with you on that one 😀
Sorry, but kawaii and lolicon (you might be more familiar with the “pedo” word) are by no means the same thing. Actually, I don’t see anything sexual in the first to pictures.
hola como va la cosa?
soy aficionado a ubuntu quiero ese fondo de pantalla si alguno quiere enviarlo por favor contactece a mbenso@y3k-it.com
abajo “guindows” jajaja
I definitely dislike the “warrior” style of the third one…
It’s stupid anyway. WTF would I want some cheesy girl wrapped around on my desktop?
I agree… girls on desktops are kind of a thing you shouldn’t see for everyone. I get the blog… if it is a joke. Sorry dude… But I DO know it shouldn’t be a penguin. Something fresh… perhaps a warthog. 😛
I think having an Official Ubuntu-tan would be awesome. Not only because it’d be eye-catching, but also because it’d be much more broadly appealing (and less stereotypical) then most of the Linux Mascots. I mean, you think about all the mascots running around and how many of them (with the exception of Tux, of course) have the same kind of recognition as the Windows Logo or the Apple apple. And those aren’t even that good looking. If you poke around deviantArt or any of the chan networks (browse chans at your own risk >_
Maybe these girls are not that suitable for some environments/people.
IMHO, it would be great to have a mascot for each release, and since each release is related to an animal, it could be the animal of that release. For dapper it shold have been a duck (well.. a drake), etc. Now… how dare to draw a beatiull feisty fawn?
I like that comic look, and I think a ‘comic’ fawn would be cute.
Salu2….

nuevamente gracias
I second Gabreil in his idea of a comic’ized mascot representing the release codename.
Though I like tans, there not generic enough and not enough politically correct.
weapons kill people! on the other hand – people kill people as well…

haha, this was posted on april 11th guys – 11x the joke!
it’s a joke, right?
I think a bunny humping a pencil sharpener would be funnier personally lololol

I used to have the first as my wallpaper when I started using Ubuntu in 2005, before deciding it was too suggestive (so I swapped it with this http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/17427630/)
Now a mascot, you say? We already have a common mascot for Linux, we need one for each distribution. That would be further evidence of divergence.
Plus, we all love Tux.
Nice kernels.
Yeah, weapons should be out.
very nicee ;]
I meant to say “we DON’T need one for each distribution”.
My typo.
They are cute (my interpretation of kawaii) and I’m now using one as my wallpaper thanks very much.
But I do agree that a more fully clothed, or perhaps androgynous, appearance would be more appropriate for a general release.
B-)
I may be a bit late on this one, but Linux-based OS-tans traditionally carry a spear, representing the security of having, well, anything that isn’t Windows. (Honestly, though, I haven’t really had any problems with either XP or Ubuntu. So whatever. Maybe Windows just attracts more idiots.) But, yeah, that’s how that works.
Personally, if I had the time or skill or dedication to create a distro (I’d BlackOpOpenSource, and it would have a cool logo. That’s as far as I’ve gotten.), the OS-tan would have to be a commando. With black clothes and a gun and stuff.
