Using sshfs to Access Remote Directories in Windows March 5, 2007

I had a tough time deciding on a title for this post/article (“in” Windows or “on” Windows? I give up!).
J Wynia writes in to share a method to how to access remote directories, such as those on your web server through sshfs on Windows. Actually that’s not the full story.
The full story is:
1) Install Ubuntu in a virtual machine in Windows
2) Setup sshfs and use that mount your remote directory
3) Setup the sshfs-mount as a Samba share
4) Access said Samba share from Windows
Tin foil hat people keep away! 🙂 Also, the author mentions troubles with his Ensim server administration software (which he worked around). Folks who use cPanel or some other server control panel might have some trouble too.
So head over to the article already!
My old article on mounting remote directories using sshfs is what prompted J Wynia to write it.

Mmhh.. installing Ubuntu in a VM in Windows seems overkill for this… can’t the same be accomplished with Cygwin ?
Fabian: No the same can’t be accomplished with Cygwin. sshfs is a filesystem driver. On Linux, this is implemented in user space using FUSE. On Windows, the filesystem driver development kit costs money, and probably isn’t compatible with the GPL.
I thought that the ext2 drivers for Windows contained some kind of kernel-usermode IFS (like FUSE), but it appears that I was wrong.
As for the overkill factor: If you’ve got a Linux box handy, you can use that. If you haven’t, and you’re forced to use Windows, you could probably justify having a Linux VM knocking around anyway.
Other alternatives include putting together Apache 2.x on Windows with an installable WebDAV module that used OpenSSH to retrieve the files. You could then use Windows native DAV client to access the files.

There are also tools for windows for this purpose, for example WebDrive or sftpDrive. Both are “shareware” though, I haven’t found a really free tool yet. I’m using sftpDrive regularly, works well.
I’m partial to “in Windoze” myself. Anything on Windoze is likely to result in lacerations.
um…. openssh makes a windows port.
is there a way to make the mounting on the dir work via a gui icon?
there is sshfs for windows http://dokan-dev.net/en/
Litio, thanks for the link, its a life saver!
litio, it’s a great find!
ooh neat. thanks!

Actually there is an easier way for mapping drives via SSH
