Sylpheed-Claws, the email client for Linux has a new name – Claws Mail.
Though this is not exactly news (the earliest “official” announcement I can find is from December 04, 2006), I just came across the news today.
I have been a sylpheed-claws Claws Mail user ever since I tried it for the first time. There is no email client that fit my needs the way Claws did. Claws’ beauty lies in its speed — of start up, synchornizing and in general, of all operations. The sensibility of the software surprised me, since it provided those features that I wanted most and felt the lack of earlier. You can “harvest” email addresses from a folder full of emails, and so many other small things that I forget. Never, ever has it crashed on me, which is more than I can say of other clients.
In fact, many times over the last few months, I have thought of writing down what exactly makes Claws superior, in my opinion. I held back since it could be some work to make notes, now that I am used to Claws. I still use Thunderbird on a Windows XP machine occasionally. It has been ages since I used Evolution, which I found heavy, slow and sometimes unresponsive. If you guys are interested, I can start keeping notes and publish an article introducing claws(though it really needs no introduction. 🙂 )

I was a big Claws fan, too, until I ran into a serious problem that sent me back to the original Sylpheed from which Claws branched. The problem is badly mangled headers and messages when sending messages as iso-2022-jp, which is pretty much mandatory here in Japan. I hope the developers get around to fixing this in future versions, because otherwise the program is one of the best around (though the latest KMail surpasses it in template support).
I would love to try a new email client outside of evolution but my company uses Exchange and Evolution or Kmail are the only ones that I’ve found to support it.
I am about this close to just refusing to use the Exchange server anymore and telling people to email me at an outside address. I’m sick of this vendor & proprietary app lock-in.
I might just check out Claws on your suggestion here. If I remember is it the default in Xfce?

After downloading Claws 2.8.0, I was no longer able to reproduce the bug above. That’s really good news. Now if I can figure out why some IMAP folders are missing the last month’s worth of messages (which show up OK in KMail)…. Any clue?
I find the user interface of the original Sylpheed more GNOMEish and somewhat prettier.
My first impression ever of sylpheed claws is that it looks more like a KDE app than a GNOME app. Too much information on screen. And I cannot find the most basic function I would expect from any IMAP-capable mail client: to only list the IMAP folders I subscribe to. I don’t want to see my spamfolder containing spam received in 2002! Am I missing a checkbox between the vast number of settings or is it really not there?
Floris: IMAP subscriptions didn’t exist in Claws before 2.8.0, which is probably why you didn’t see that. They are implemented now 🙂

If you ever do write such an article, I hope you will include some background to Sylpheed and Claws. Sylpheed comes out of a rich history of Japan-originated email clients, but is the first one for Linux. Some of the others include Becky! Internet Mail, EdMax, Datula, TuruKame Mail (now Hidemaru Mail), and Gaucho. One of the things these programs have in common is the concept of folder-specific default settings. For example, you can designate a default TO: address for a folder, and default account, name, etc. Then when you initiate a message from that folder, those settings are made automatically. X-Face support and lots of good attention to details are other features of the Japanese mailers.
One thing Claws does not yet have is the ability to define default templates for a folder or account, which KMail has recently implemented.
Anybody who hasn’t used Evolution in a year would certainly feel the current claws-mail is better.
I’ve used both recently. In general, most people are better suited by Evolution.
Claws is highly desirable for someone who needs to directly access Berkley-style MH mailboxes. It is also very powerful in terms of mail-handling (rules, etc.). While most power-users prefer procmail or a dedicating mail-filtering application for that purpose, rather than relying upon their mail client (which isn’t running all the time), this is a distinguishing feature. And it is fast.
But Evolution has really come a long way in recent months in terms of stability and features. For example, PDA synchronization, collaborative scheduling, and MS Exchange server integration are important features. Meanwhile, I can get all the other stuff I love about claws out of procmail, esmtp, and other tools already built into my system.
I had tried sylpheed, sylpheed-claws and sylpheed-claws-gtk on my Ubuntu system since Evolution crashed so often it was unuseable (sorry, John). All had problems and quirks. Then, this morning, by accident, I noticed some packages with the term “mail-claws” in them while trying to get GnuPG to work with sylpheed-claws. I found the Claws-Mail webpage, checked it out, installed the Ubuntu packages for 2.9.2 and a few extra plugins from the webpage, and voilà, it all works fine. Some hints (like 0 means messages removed immediately from POP3 server in the receive mail setup) are no longer written as they were in sylpheed so some user-friendliness may have regressed. All in all, I like it a lot.

You may be pleased to know that the next version, 2.10, which will be ready in a few weeks, will have this feature…
