Ubuntu Thong Spotted on BBC website – Oh, and Bill Clinton talks about Ubuntu September 29, 2006

Imagine my surprise when I find a picture of the Ubuntu thong on BBC.
Ubuntu. That was what Bill Clinton told the Labour party conference it needed to remember this week. “Society is important because of Ubuntu.”
But what is it? Left-leaning sudoku? U2’s latest album? Fish-friendly sushi?
No, it’s a word describing an African worldview, which translates as “I am because you are,” and which means that individuals need other people to be fulfilled.
The operating system I love gets a brief mention (besides the thong, that is). It is good to see how the word (and hopefully the philosophy) is gaining currency. Ubuntu the OS has very high ideals to aim for, and very high standards to maintain.
From the guy who was the main proponent of bombing Serbia and Montenegro in 1999. He certainly needed “other people” to become fulfilled, or he wouldn’t know who to bomb: some twisted Ubuntu, that is. 😉
@Danilo: no problem with that, Ubuntu means “Humanity to others”. So “Do I have humanity? No,that’s for the others!” 😛
Danilo, I dislike bombing Serbia too, but what else would you do to stop Serbians to do in Kosovo what europe let to happen in Croatia and Bosna? Remember Srebrenica? Check it out in wikipedia. Serbs still hide war criminals – responsible for the only genocide in europe since WWII.
Someone needs to stand to a bully. Europe did not. Serbia was a bully, and got punished. Of course people are punished for leaders they elected.
You cannot be ubuntu and hate other people.
Thanks Peter!
Peter! I suppose mass media totally washed your brain. There is not a single proven fact of Serbian crimes you are talking about. And I can’t see any good reason to bomb any independent country. It is called “aggression”. And especially I cant see any reason to bomb non-military objects which fact definitely took place. It is called “genocide”. It has nothing to do with ubuntu.
My entire point was that there is no mention of Ubuntu if you can simply decide to bomb a country knowing the risk of at least 1000 civilian casualties (of 10M population, and it was more like 2000 during 79 days of bombing).
And I won’t be responding to Peter’s political views, mostly because I don’t want to misuse Carthik’s blog for that.
But please, don’t put Clinton and Ubuntu in the same sentence, and even praise that. Clinton (like any other politician) is looking to market himself, whoever wants to help him is free to do so, but I feel it’s wrong to do it from Ubuntu perspective.
Yeah, guess we don’t have to worry about George “Nuke A Whale For Jesus” Bush becoming a Ubuntu user, aye? 😉

Ubuntu – “I am because we are and none of us is greater than all of us”
The central issue is togetherness.
