Re-do Ubuntu In Blue July 30, 2006
Posted by Carthik in looks and feel, ubuntu.trackback
Since a one-off complaint about Ubuntu is it’s “brownness”, I thought I’d mention a couple of quick and easy ways to make your Ubuntu blue if you like your operating system to be blue. I, by the way, love Ubuntu’s brown theme – that was one thing that really made an impression on me the first time – I mean, everything else is blue, so a change was refreshing to me.
For this post, I don’t have to do much work. A couple of folks have made it a lot easier for me, and I don’t see the point in rewriting the already excellent descriptions.
So let’s get down to converting Ubuntu to blue, shall we?:
Teenage Tantrum’s guide is very comprehensive and covers all bases. He even mentions the Blubuntu Ubuntu Artwork project which seems to suggest that a “unified” blubuntu theme will be available to users after August 12th.
Brent Roos’ Prescription includes a GTK theme, a metacity theme and an Icon theme with detailed instructions on how to get and install them. Note: The tango icon theme is very blue and in my opinion, very pretty. You might want to keep that as an option for the icons.
I haven’t had any customization or style guides posted here so far since I think it is all a matter of personal taste. I use a brown + graphite theme on both my computers and am happy with it. If you like screenshots and would like me to feature cool “looks” let me know, and I will try my best.
If blue is really your thing, perhaps Kubuntu would be to your liking. I have always preferred KDE to Gnome and Kubuntu has a lovely BLUE heavy default theme for KDE.
As I said, whatever floats your boat is good enough. As you have said before, it’s all about the freedom of choice.
I agree that the Tango icon theme is pretty. I just like the new Human look, and in this case, it is blue instead of orange. Another one of my favorite icon packages is Dropline Etiquette. This is what I was previously using.
It’s all a matter of personal preference. I am happy to share with the world, what I consider to be cool. To me, that is a huge part of blogging anyway.

People should know about the Official Blubuntu project. They need all the artwork they can get. I’m active on the Ubuntu Artwork Wikis.
Hey check out this.
Is that considered plagerism when someone copies exactly what you wrote without giving the original author credit?
I liked the brown, It gives Ubuntu an unique look.
Heck, I even installed the Ubuntu theme in Firefox, just so it’d match.
Thanks Brent – I HATE suckers. I wish people would actually write something new and useful. If you don’t have anything to add to the discussion, why reproduce it in whole?
I left the author a comment, lets see what happens.
I used to have excerpt-only feeds, and then some readers said they love/want the full feeds and so I turned it on. Oh well, what the hell.
No sweat.
The problem that I saw, is that he didn’t even link back to you. I would have to consider that plagiarism, if he is not going to credit you for the actual authoring. He acted as if he wrote it.
It was verbatim of your post.
I recall reading here a while back about repeat bloggers. I hate that too. There are about 200 million blogs like that on the Internet. What good does it do to repeat someone else’s work? It’s called making a link, and perhaps adding some perspective, or something.
Anyway, I thought that you might want to know. Oddly enough, he still had the links to teen, and myself, because he didn’t change a thing from the post!
I was going to leave a comment to him in Spanish, calling him a jerk, but I thought you would rather do it.
I’m always looking out for my friends. I got your back dude!
By the way, I don’t see your comment there. He is linking to me, but principle always comes first with me. As you may have seen, from the description of my blog, I espouse the Power of Truth.
😀
Hey thanks for the tip on the ubuntu ff theme. I can’t wait to get home and check it out now…
(Found it at http://www.ffnn.nl/pages/projects/ubuntu-firefox-themes.php)
[…] Luckily, I stumbled on the converting Ubuntu to blue article, which sets out to solve this very problem. Essentially it just presents links to Ubuntu to Blubuntu , it’s a zip and Blubuntu which elaborates even more. In addition, I also found Down with Brown – Changing Login / Splash Screen on Ubuntu Dapper Drake (6.06) […]
ubuntonista,
I now have submitted my own artwork for Blubuntu. Check it out.
😎
Hey!
Heres a great theme I discovered on Gnome-look which gives you the vista glass effect over Gnome.
The configuration steps for Ubuntu are here:

It’s very easy to find out any matter on net as compared to books, as I found this article at this web site.
