Introducing the Dapper-Commercial Repository July 8, 2006

It is not the death of freedom in Ubuntu land, but it certainly is the birth of one kind of freedom – freedom of choice.
Canonical, Ubuntu’s parent company has announced the dapper-commercial repository, where one will hopefully find packages released by commercial companies (read non-open-source) for use by Ubuntu users. Right now, all the repository has is Opera 9, and RealPlayer 10. Hopefully as time progresses, we will see more software, like, say, Skype, that are useful to users presently, though they are not open source, in this repository.
Some may say this is step backward for Ubuntu, but here’s some reasons this is not so, in my opinion:
1) The repositories are not Ubuntu repositories, they are on a seperate Canonical server. These repos are not included in Ubuntu by default, but users can add them if they like them. They are perfectly legal, with Canonical having laid the groundwork for distributing them.
2) I believe in freedom of choice – for me, I will use a superior product even if the source code is not free, if I feel like it! I am all for people making money off of their work, as long as they don’t start squashing or trashing other good things I like by wielding their power or influence. In short, let us all be, and we’ll probably like you, and even use you 😉 Maybe I should think more about writing down the reasons why and when I’d use a non-open-source product, just for the heck of it.
So, friends, don’t worry, and be happy that you have more choices. If you’d like to start using the new repository, to get opera 9 or realplayer 10, then add the following line to your list of repositories:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu dapper-commercial main
(I personally find it easiest to manually edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file and add the line in.
Then you need to do a $sudo apt-get update, and you are all set. You can install opera 9, for example, by doing a
$sudo apt-get install opera
Neat.
I love Opera by the way, and would use it as my only browser if only they figured out a way to let me synchronize my bookmarks between multiple computers.

I like Opera too. It allows me to test whether or not my web designs conform to standards and that there are no errors in my code. It is great for troubleshooting HTML display problems. I also like its efficiency. I hope they eventually release it as open source. It could then give Firefox a “run for its money.”

Why doesn’t shuttleworth just come out and say he is going to make an enterprise Ubuntu. Why does he insist on being a Debian. Making a proprietory Debian distro is not a bad thing but it is annoying to see Shuttleworth still try to act like a true blue debian.
He is going to use UBuntu to launch an enterprise server edition and he is going to sell properiety applications to Ubuntu users. To me it isn’t a big deal but his way of going about it makes me assume he is a devious person who thinks he can outsmart anyone.
If you know him, tell him to come out of the closet and say he has proprietary aims for ubuntu. Personaly I would like to see linux go mainstream and shutleworth’s distro appears to be the one to do it but he is goping to need money. So fine, make an enterprise server edition and sell support to it. Make proprietary applications available to ubuntu users for a fee and use that money to hire devs and develop an even better installer and maybe some drivers.
But stop going to debconf and stop talking like you are hardcore oss. That is unappealling and insulting to everyone who enjoys your product.

You know, T.J., I started to just dismiss your comment, but then I thought, “You know… he’s right.”
I rent a server at Rackspace. I love Rackspace. I could save a lot of money by moving somewhere else, but I really, really like Rackspace for a lot of reasons. One thing that I’m starting to regret is that I can’t get Ubuntu installed on my server and supported by Rackspace. Having a Dapper server installation on that box would be too sweet. Until Canonical offers an “Enterprise” version with support, trainging and certification, that’s just a nice thought.
I don’t know if Mr. Shutleworth is trying to be be coy or snide or sneaky, but I would love to see an Enterprise version of Ubuntu with certification so that I could extend the Ubuntu goodness onto my production server!
Where can I find a list of the packages that will be offered through this and what advantage does this provide over other repositories that alreay have these packages
I’ve actaully been considering Ubuntu server for my companies purposes and the business model seems to be almost soley support revenue driven. The dapper server release is marked LTS for long term support with the intention of supporting this distro release for 5 years. I believe it actually says on their site that they have no intention of ever charging for a license on the distro and that you only need to buy support for your production systems. It is the main way they are differentiating themselves from Redhat and SUSE. Yes they are trying to make an “Enterprise Class Linux” whatever specifically that catch phrase is suppossed to mean this week, but that doesn’t make him Bill Gates… By the way I also use flash player on my Ubuntu desktop does that make be like Bill too? Also who mentioned a fee? The realplayer and opera are free as in beer, both being adware. I don’t think you can get the pay versions through the apt-get repository. This is really not a big thing, just a little convienience added to make Ubuntu a bit more attractive as a distro. Their business model seems smart and ethical from my perspective:
Step 1) Make the best linux distro you can.
– Ubuntu is arguably the best out of the box linux desktop available right now. As a server its a better debian than Debian, really the best of both worlds. Also Shuttleworth is using his capital to make deals to get his distro certified in the same ways that Redhat and SUSE are to make Ubuntu are trustworthy alternative.
Step 2) Get it into as many hands and running on as many systems as possible.
– Having a great distro and then handing it out for free is a good start. In case you don’t know you can order free copies of Ubuntu to distribute as you wish.
Step 3) Offer quality support at a comparable price and SLA.
Assume that if steps 1 & 2 worked well that you’ll get a large number of people who’ll want to have support contracts on their production systems.
Step 4) Profit.
I dont think that is “the” havoc, as in havoc pennington.
Enterprise does not have to mean propritary though.

Is very easy – and works even with other browsers. I suggest you take a look on Sitebar ( http://sitebar.org )
It’s online-bookmarks. In my opinion it’s pretty “perfect”
a) integrates into browser very neatly (IE, FF, OP)
b) it does not matter that the bookmarks are saved on a server on the internet: Whenever you need them, you are probably online 😉
c) OpenSource and therefor free
d) you have your bookmarks on every computer available you use to work on the internet with (even your friends …)
e) OS independant: Bookmarks available in every browser on every OS

In my opinion, that is a good cause for the Ubuntu community. Previously I would need to re-compile my Realplayer in order to get it to work in Ubuntu. Now, with this repository, all I need is an apt-get. Great work!

Good statement. Nothing wrong with using good “commercial” software. Actually: I am using crossover office to run some Windoze-only programs I can’t do without.
Well, if the problem is to synchronize your bookmarks, why don´t you experiment del.icio.us?
Regarding bookmarks syncing – osync seems to be for windows machines only. I would much rather keep the bookmarks in the browser than using delicious – using Ctrl+D to add a bookmark can’t be beat, and this way, I can search and use the bookmarks with less effort.

Lets get the Google apps in there: Google Earth, WINE Picasa. That’s the kind of thing that they’re putting in there, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I can’t use apt-get to get Google software, but I should be able to soon.

فصل اول :
هدفهاي رفتاري : پس از مطالعه اين فصل از فراگير انتظار مي رود :
1. با ساختار حلقه ها آشنا شود .
2. ساختار دستورات شرطي را بداند.
3. آشنايي با انواع روالها و نحوه استفاده از آنها در بيسيك را بداند.
مقدمه :
براي كار در محيط ويژوال بيسيك آشنا بودن با زبان بيسيك و روش برنامه نويسي با آن امري لازم وضروري است . در اين بخش مروري بر ساختارهاي كنترلي و تكرار ، همچنين طريقه ايجاد و استفاده از توابع در محيط QBasicرا خواهيم داشت .دو محيط QBasic و [1]VB ، بطور كامل از هم جدا بوده و حتي از لحاظ ماهيتي نيز تفاوت دارند بطوري كه QBasic در سيستم عامل DOS و ويژوال بيسيك در محيط ويندوز اجرا مي شوند ، با اين حال چون از لحاظ ساختاري تشابهات زيادي بين آنها وجود دارد در ابتداي كتاب ،مختصراً در مورد آنچه قبلا خوانده ايد مطالبي را خواهيم آورد.
1-1- ساختار كنترلي ( If/Then/Else ) :
يكي ازدستورات مهم برنامه نويسي به زبان QBasic دستور شرطي If مي باشد. شكل كلي دستور If بصورت زيراست :

Condition يك عبارت يا متغير شرطي با مقدارTrue يا False است . در صورتي كه مقدار Condition برابر True باشد دستورات بين if وEndif اجراخواهد شد. اگرتعداد دستورات ( Statements ) شامل يك دستورالعمل باشدميتوان دستور شرطي را بصورت خلاصه تر نوشت :

البته شكل كامل تر دستور If به شكل زير مي باشد:

در صورت درست بودن شرط (Condition) دستورات Statement1 و در غير اين صورت (نادرست بودن شرط) دستورات Statement2 اجرا خواهند شد .
همانطوري كه مي دانيد از دستور if بصورت تودرتونيز استفاده مي شود در اين دستورات هر Else و Endif به نزديكترين if متناظر تعلق دارند.
مثال: مي خواهيم دستورالعملهايي بنويسيم كه اگر مقدار ذخيره شده در متغير chk زوج باشد پيغام “Even” و در غير اين صورت ( فرد بودن متغير) پيغام “odd” را چاپ نمايد .

مثال: برنامه زير مشخص كننده تعداد ريشه هاي يك معادله درجه دوم مي باشد كه داراي ضرايب a و b و c مي باشد:

2-1- دستور انتخابي Select Case :
اگر تعداد شرطهاي يك مسئله زياد باشد ، بجاي استفاده از If هاي تودرتو از دستور انتخابي Select Case استفاده مي كنيم .
شكل كلي اين دستور به صورت زير است :

در اين ساختار مي توان به تعداددلخواه و بسته به شرايط برنامه مورد نظر ، شرط را توسط تعيين مقدار Expression در مقابل دستورات Case استفاده كرده، به ازاء هر مورد بلوك دستورات مربوطه(Statements) را جهت اجرا قرار داد. در پايان دستورات به اختيار مي توان از دستور Case else نيز استفاده كرد، كه در اين صورت اگر هيچ كدام از مقادير موجود در Case ها با مقدار Expression ساختار برابر نباشد ، دستورات بعد از Case else اجرا مي شود.
نكته اي كه بايد به آن توجه داشته باشيد يكسان بودن نوع داده ها در Expression وExpression match ها مي باشد.
مثال : برنامه اي كه يك عدد را بعنوان شماره روز هفته گرفته ونام آن روز را چاپ كند:

در ساختار Select case مي توان بجاي استفاده از Expression match ، از عملگرهاي is وTo نيز استفاده نمود .به مثال زير توجه كنيد:

Compared to say, the PLF, these are ‘legal’ packages (that is, Canonical has the right to redistribute them) and Canonical is maintaining them (I’ve noticed the PLF can be a little slow in getting the most recent versions)

Actually, for Picasa, as per http://picasa.google.com/linux/faq.html#5b just add this line to your sources.list file:
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free
Hopefully they’ll add more programs to their repository in the future and/or get them into dapper-commercial 🙂

If RealNetworks and the Opera folks had their own repositories for Ubuntu, everyone would be congratulating them for making their software so easy to install.
But because Canonical is running the repository, it’s all “Mark Shuttleworth is Bill Gates”. Grow up, people.

I don’t think that commercial repository is bad. “closed” software is not part of the main distribution and is not installed by default. This is freedom of choice, freedom to follow a clean or dirty way. IMHO commercial applications could offer features that free software *actually* can’t, but is a temporary gap. Nothing else.
My only concern of commercial repository is the mode to use this. Is not so easy find what is commercial and not. Please, ubuntuers.. make a lift on your software updater.

Ubuntu already distributes non-free software (unsupported) through the restricted and multiverse repositories (even Debian does the same). Anyone is free to set up a repository with additional software: the PLF, for example, provides sofware that is illegal in some strange countries like the US 😉 and fortunately legal almost everywhere.
I don’t like it and wouldn’t use it, but there seems to be no ground for preventing a company from having a repository of commercial software that can be used in ubuntu, even if that involves a fee.
I do object, however, to Canonical selling an “entreprise” or whatever version of ubuntu, because it was an early promise of ubuntu and Shuttleworth that ubuntu would always be free. If anyone wants to set up another paid linux distribution, don’t call it ubuntu, and don’t mix its development with that of ubuntu.

I’m still waiting for someone to release a DVD player I can purchase for Ubuntu.
Totally agree on the Google apps in commercial if they can’t be anywhere else.
Some of us actually like some commercial software like Opera, for example. Picasa for Linux, should be next to be in the commercial repository.
It would be unwise to put a purist vision before freedom of choice, which is what Ubuntu is all about anyway, is it not?
Yahoo, needs to update its messenger software for Linux, because it is way too old to use anymore. It still works, but it is soooo ugly. This could also be included.
Other companies should take heed and pay attention to what some companies are doing with software like Opera and RealPlayer10; keeping up-to-date versions of their software for Linux. When they release a new version of the software, the Linux version is also new.
I really think that there is a future in this. This gives companies an excuse to make their software available for Linux, and also shows them that there is a real demand for it.
This is a good thing. Now watch it grow.

This IS a big part of the future!
I have been a highly satisfied Ubuntu user for 14 months (three releases now), but before that I had spent multiples of tens of thousands on commercial software (for that other OS) over a decade.
I am not adverse to paying for software. What I do appreciate is running the best available, and many open source packages are great, and much appreciated, but there are gaps.
There are even commercial *nix packages without Ubuntu versions, and if this site can help them to release Ubuntu packages, all the better.
Two commercial *Nix packages that are on my personal shopping list are:
QCAD Professional
Cubit Accounting (this package sorely needs an ubuntu package for easy installation!!!)
I firmly believe that there is a market for good quality commercial packages in Linux. What do I miss most? Flash, Dreamweaver and a style sheet editor such as TopStyle.
I was just earlier thinking about whatever happened to CNR being put on Ubuntu. I like this new repo since I use Opera on all my computers and I can now put it onto Ubuntu through a Canonical repo. What I’d really love to see is a way to pay for easy install for commercial Linux games (UT200X), similar to CNR, for Ubuntu, so I know it will work well and not need any extra config
It would be good to get the closed-source Google apps like Picasa and Google Earth in this repository – I don’t know of an open source equivalent to something like Google Earth at the moment.
Reading your comment about Opera’s bookmarks, made me think about the Flock browser. It is derived from Firefox 1.5 and uses del.icio.us (or shadows) to keep your bookmarks, making it ideal for people working on multiple computers.

Reading your comment about Opera’s bookmarks, made me think about the Flock browser. It is derived from Firefox 1.5 and uses del.icio.us (or shadows) to keep your bookmarks, making it ideal for people working on multiple computers. http://www.goruntuluchatt.tr.gg
If RealNetworks and the Opera folks had their own repositories for Ubuntu, everyone would be congratulating them for making their software so easy to install.

Where can I find a list of the packages that will be offered through this and what advantage does this provide over other repositories that alreay have these packages
I like Opera too. It allows me to test whether or not my web designs conform to standards and that there are no errors in my code. It is great for troubleshooting HTML display problems. I also like its efficiency. I hope they eventually release it as open source. It could then give Firefox a “run for its money.”
