Install Picasa on Ubuntu May 26, 2006

Google’s famed Picasa photo management app is now available for Linux!. In perhaps what is a sign of the growing stature of Ubuntu in the Linux world, there is a .deb file available for download, made for Ubuntu (or so the page says).

To install Picasa, download the .deb file, and install it by running the following command from the directory that the .deb file is in:
$sudo dpkg -i picasa_2.2.2820-5_i386.deb
(Please check if the version number in the above is correct – it should be the same as the name of the .deb you downloaded)

I usually avoid using non-open source software on my Ubuntu machines, but I’ve decided to give Picasa a try. If it is noteworthy, I will write more about it. At least one ubuntu-using friend of mine should be very happy when he gets to know about this when he wakes up tomorrow 🙂

Hmm strange, the link is somehow disappeared 😦

My be next time I’ll catch it.

2. Del - May 26, 2006

I was looking forward to this, I like f-spot, but I preferred Picasa when I was on Windows, shame those links are down.

3. ubuntonista - May 26, 2006

There was a message in the FAQ saying that it is only available to users in the USA. Maybe you are trying to access the pages from a different geographical location, and that’s why you can’t access the download page. I checked a moment ago, and it worked just fine for me.

You could ask a friend in the US to download it and make it available for download somewhere else 😉

5. Mirko - May 26, 2006

6. Bram Bonné - May 26, 2006

Too bad I wouldn’t know how to set up a proxy so I could get Picasa. Anyone already uploaded it to their own webspace yet?

7. Miroslav Bazitov - May 26, 2006

Yes, that was the problem, I’m definitely not in the USA!

But with this anonymouser I have a success 🙂

You can download picasa with a direct link:

http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/pool/non-free/p/picasa/picasa_2.2.2820-5_i386.deb

It worked for me.

only USA, 404 error 😦

18. Matthias - May 26, 2006

You can beat Google with their own tool: Google translate. Just insert “picasa.google.com/linux/download.html” into the the translation box, select translation from english and hit submit. Worked for me.

19. Hogg - May 26, 2006

Even though it’s not open source, Picasa is one of the best pieces of software I’ve ever used.

20. krampo - May 26, 2006

Tried today on Ubuntu Breezy – what can I say? Google knows how to attract people to their apps. Although I’m not a fan of Picasa, but they have done this thing the right way by implementing it together with wine so you don’t have to bother about installing and configuring wine and having headaches. Kudos Google.

PS. We at Linux Center of University of Latvia put these files on our FTP

ftp://ftp.linux.edu.lv/pub/PicasaLinux

PPS. As I understood from some comments on other sites, it’s definately that this is for US only, but probably because other Google mirror serves just haven’t updated yet?

You’re invited too. Please read my post from today. Don’t miss the comments. 🙂

24. apt-get install » apt-get install PICASA!!! - May 29, 2006

[…] In a previous entry, I mentioned that Google had promised to do a WINE port of Picasa to Linux. According to Ubuntu Blog (and just about every other tech news source in the world), Google has finally come through. That’s right, Picasa on Linux! I’ve already downloaded the .deb that Ubuntu Blog links to and used dpkg to install it. And I am pleasantly surprised at how smooth Picasa is working so far. It’s currently importing my massive photo collection, but I’ve been playing around viewing, sorting and searching for pics. It all works, better than expected. […]

Hey folks,
please note that the Picasa EULA doesn’t permit
mirroring — so please remove it from any non-google mirror sites.
Google ought to have enough bandwidth to make everybody
happy, I would think.
Also: Picasa can be downloaded by apt-get, see
http://picasa.google.com/linux/faq.html#5b
for Debian/Ubuntu instructions

30. Joshua Davis - July 10, 2006

Picasa was my prefered photo manager on Windows, but it works like crap on SuSE 10.0. I know this is about Unbutu and I don’t mean to start distro wars, but Google should’ve kept the Linux version in alpha for a bit longer, it’s just to rough on the edges to be considered beta. How well does it work on Ubuntu?

It’s possible to install (and update) Picasa (and other Google apps) using apt-get. It’s covered in this article;

35. Fhernd - March 15, 2009

Hi! I have a trouble with Picasa: When I try to upload pictures, Picasa requires me a username and password from Google Accounts, I have ’em, but I can not login… I’m under proxy server…

I followed this guide: http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Wine_Registry#Proxy_Server but does work…

Thanks!
