Tool to Migrate from Windows to Ubuntu Linux March 28, 2006

The Versora Progression Desktop is a tool to help users migrate settings and files from Windows to Linux. Versora now supports Ubuntu.

Our favourite Mark seems quite happy with it:

“Progression Desktop provides a valuable solution to those seeking to migrate their data and settings off their Window desktops over to Ubuntu,” said Ubuntu Founder Mark Shuttlesworth (sic). “It basically allows users to take their personality profile and data with them automatically and saves a lot of time when compared to a manual migration.”

You need a license of Versora for each desktop you migrate. A license costs $29.00. So the question is, would you pay $29.00 for “somebody” to migrate your settings and files from Windows to Ubuntu? If you would, then maybe you should try Versora.

I wonder how the thing works. Would like to try it, but can’t spare $29 for the purpose of experimentation.

I wish they had a ‘trial’ version… Can’t we (read: someone) come up with a GPL kinda product for this?

IMO, for “regular users” to make the jump to linux, there’s going to have to be some serious development done on (free) tools like this. Users can already take their favorite apps with them (Firefox, Thunderbird, Gaim, etc). Setting up schemes that allow linux programs to migrate and share this data is still a big hassle for someone without solid computer knowledge, though.

You misspelled Shuttleworth.

jgb, I was quoting from the article. I added a (sic) to the quote to clarify that it wasn’t a mistake on my part 🙂

Thanks!

Nah, I don’t think I would pay $29 for that. I have to keep my Windows partition for a few reasons anyway, so I’m quite happy with just kludging my way through.

Thats really great. About this time last year, i wrote a paper entitled “Migrating from Windows to Linux – Loosing your spyware problems for good” so your post really made me remember. The article discussed how you would go about migrating and demonstrated how its done, but with this new app Versora…all that is totally automated. Sounds like a really awsome app.

I’m anxiously awaiting for my copy of Ubuntu. I will not dual boot, and frankly I don’t have enough settings I’d need to transfer them.
