HP’s Sean Owen-Jones also said the company would shortly be releasing desktop and notebook PCs running Ubuntu Linux. The NX6110 notebook would be available shortly with Ubuntu and a desktop PC would also be available.
From … HP to ship Ubuntu PCs, serious about Linux.
I hope the laptops are cheaper by the amount they would have had to pay to have Windows and other Windows related software on the machine.
This is great news, especially since if the machines come with Ubuntu pre-installed, all the hardware will work for sure, without problems, or tweaking.
Hi,
HP has been promoting Linux on Laptop but not whole heartedly.
I bought HP/COMPAQ Presario 2500 Laptop last year with tailor made CDs of Mandrake Linux 9.1 but the whole responsibilty of installing and running the OS was on me (the customer). When I looked at Mandrake (now Mandriva) for support I was supposed to pay for each incidence of support or join Mandrake Club by paying.
The driver for internal Conexant Modem was “Free” version (restricted to 14.2 KBPs) and I had to pay license fee to Linuxant to make it “Full” version (56 KBPs).
Finally I found Ubuntu and installed it side by side with Mandriva (in dual boot) but I mostly use Ubuntu except when I require to run some RPM based (or KDE based) application.
The fundemental reason why we are going to be shipping our Notebooks with Linux is to reduce the cost of our hardware and thus making it more easily affordable for the general public as well as learners in educational institutions.
