Solution: add &quot;i8042.nomux=1&quot; to the grub command line for the chosen kernel at boot.  Use Google to find out how to modify the /boot/grub/grub.conf (or /boot/grub/menu.lst - same file) and add the above (minus quotes) to the kernel line.

You can now use either the default mouse driver or the Synaptics driver described by the blog post above.</description>
